Dan was appointed as consultant ophthalmic surgeon in the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust in 2013. Prior to this he trained in Oxford and London, where he gained advanced sub-specialty skills in complex cataract surgery and cornea transplantation. A senior clinical and research fellowship in Nottingham followed this, again concentrating on diseases of the anterior segment of the eye, such as endothelial cornea grafts and ocular surface diseases such as dry eye.
He is now based at the Spire Eye Centre in Worcester and also Little Aston Hospital Sutton Coldfield, where he performs cataract and refractive surgery as well as ‘ultra-thin’ endothelial cornea grafts.
His research into cataract surgery incision imaging has been recognised throughout the world. He was one of the first surgeons to investigate techniques for improving cornea micro-wound architecture using optical coherence tomography imaging. This work led to improvements in blade design and the understanding of how to create better and safer incisions that seal immediately at the end of surgery.
He has published extensively on the subject of cataract surgery as well as writing book chapters on the subject. In 2012 was also the first author of a major Cochrane review update comparing multifocal intraocular lenses with monofocal lenses for cataract surgery.
